Wesley scared us up a cord of wood from a local farm, and the fire roars and cracks as I nest in the corner of the sectional and trawl through an internet’s worth of gift ideas on my laptop.

I watch him poke at the logs until embers swarm like fireflies. My beautiful pyromaniac plays with kindling and paper and logs every night now like he’s responsible for keeping the earth’s core aflame.

“If you refuse to tell me what you want, you risk ending up with socks or coal,” I warn him. “Or worse, socks filled with coal.”

“I trust you,” he says, leaning back on his haunches as his latest log alights.

“What about your parents? I don’t want Bertie Blackwood to say her new daughter-in-law cheaped out or gives bad gifts. I was thinking—”

“Don’t worry about them.” He turns to me. “We never made a huge deal about Christmas growing up. I’ll order something online.”

“You better do it soon if you want it to arrive in time.”

He hasn’t asked me what I want, so I assume he has a surprise planned for our first Christmas together.

“We’re going to have to raise our Christmas game, anyway,” I remind him. “Have you seen the social club’s holiday lineup? Our application is still pending, so I think we’re expected to go to everything.”

“We are.”

He is gazing into the fire like it’s calling to him, like he wants to walk in and become part of the inferno.
