No-Frills Selling

During the first weeks and months of your auction-selling career, the “no-frills” route can be your surest path to success. If you can gather some good items, describe them clearly and thoroughly, and show them with photographs, you will sell many of them without using anything other than the auction site's basic selling tools.

In this “learn as you go” approach, you can work gradually on improving your advertising skills and photography skills. Each time you have a new item to list, you can try one or two different features, if you wish, but never go overboard. Some inexperienced sellers think they must use every available tool, and the results often scare bidders rather than attract them. Also, online auction sites charge extra to use some of their fancier selling tools and features. If you stick to no-frills selling, you will keep your auction fees to a comfortable minimum. It is possible to spend hundreds of dollars on special selling features, yet end up selling your item for $20 or less — or not at all. No frills is the way to go for maximum profit when you sell and the lowest losses when an item doesn't sell.

Focus on posting the right information in the right category, with enough pictures to show potential bidders what's available. You won't need fancy borders, background colors, huge typefaces, or colorful fonts to grab your customers. To misquote the movie Field of Dreams, if you post it in the right category with the right title, the right description, and the right photographs, they will come.
