Chapter Seventeen
Jackson had to admit he was impressed. As soon as he had stepped into a chamber that was new to himâguided by the mapâhe had come across something incredible. The room he found himself in stretched on for what looked like miles, its surface soft green grass rather than rough stone. In the far distance, he could just about make out walls, but they were obscured by the rolling hills that dominated the skyline. From above fake sunlight poured in and the room was noticeably warmer than the rest of the dungeon.
Directly ahead of him was a makeshift wall not unlike the one around Haven. It surrounded the entrance of the room, no doubt intended to protect what was within from marauding monsters and those with ill intent. Four guards stood up on its wobbly-looking parapet whilst another two flanked each side of the scrap-built gate.
As Jackson approached, they nodded and opened the way, motioning for him to pass. News of his travel had to have reached them and they had been waiting for his arrival. The reason for the heavy guard was apparent once the gates had swung open and Jackson could see more of the strange green room.
Scattered across the grassy plain were several farms. Vast fields filled with crops and animals. There were cows, sheep and several things he didnât recognise along with wheat and corn waving in a breeze coming from somewhere unexplained. At the far north side of the room was another doorway through which several wagons were passing through in a trailing caravan. Jackson suspected that route looped back on itself and led to one of the many doors of Haven, likely with fewer turnings to defend than the one he had taken. Suddenly the townâs abundance of food made sense, as well as its location. Finding a large chamber big enough to hold buildings so close to one that held fertile soil had to have been the reasoning behind founding Haven. Someone, likely Lorian, had been wise enough to not consume valuable and presumably rare farmland with the space the town would have taken.
The presence of a vast rolling hillside within the dungeon was unexpected but Jackson knew he shouldnât have been surprised. The entire bizarre superstructure was an enigma. Some rooms were filled with deadly traps whilst others housed forests and fields, water fountains and other things required for survival. It felt almost like the dungeon had two designers each violently opposed to each otherâs philosophy.
Glancing down at his map Jackson could see that he was near to his goal, at least on paper anyway. There were three more chambers for him to travel and the monsterâs proximity to what had to be vital farms for Haven was concerning. Unfortunately for him the guards who had given Jackson the map were right, it wasnât drawn to scale. Whoever had made it had chosen to depict the enormous farmland chamber in the same small square size as the rest of the rooms he had passed through.
