TERMINATION DON'TS
Don't make the meeting long.
Don't go on the defensive.
Don't be insensitive.
Don't use humor.
Don't make promises you can't keep.
Updated message for managers
Frequent, specific, accurate, and timely feedback is one of the most critical requirements for sustained high-level performance. Without it, performance may fail.
When performance or behavioral issues exist, treat the employee as an adult and provide genuine support for them to change.
In our combined fifty years in the Human Resources field, sometimes we feel like we've seen every kind of performance, behavioral, and disciplinary problem imaginable. Unfortunately, employees keep coming up with new and different ways to require counseling, discipline, and termination. At the time of this writing, some of the hot-button issues in employee relations include sexual harassment, workplace bullying, inappropriate use of social media, transgender bathrooms, and using office Wi-Fi for personal business. That's just a partial list, and we suspect that by the time this book reaches you there will be even more challenges in employee relations.
Your job is to make sure you identify and anticipate as many of these issues as possible. Create a legal, non-discriminatory policy for dealing with each of them. Then make sure your employee handbook clearly defines that policy—exactly how you expect your employees to comply with it—and what will happen if they don't. Remember: Your watchwords are communication, consistency, and fairness. If you get those three things right, you will go a long way to creating a happy and productive workforce.
