Yorvin had claimed it wasn’t magic. But Sharna had stepped through a black curtain into a cavern she knew was not there. It wasn’t natural. Either this was magic, or the word Yorvin had used meant the same thing.

Dornis was sitting cross-legged near the curtain watching the strangers as they investigated a portion of the wall covered with rubble.

“Perhaps you were right to heal the young woman after all,” he smiled. “The sorcerers have great power. Since I was a boy, I have wanted to know what lies within this building. Now I am here inside it because of them.”

“I am sorry that I went against your word, Dornis.”

“I’m sure you are,” he said, “but I wonder if you understand the effects of what you did.”

“Cobannis was dying. I had to act or it would have been too late.”

“That’s true,” Dornis said, “but remember, I will not remain Chieftain long if I am seen as weak. If I am challenged and overcome because I allowed a woman to defy me, you can be sure the new Chieftain will not be as tolerant. If it had been anyone else, I would have had no choice but to punish them.”

“I’m sorry, Chieftain,” she whispered, bowing her head. “I will remember.” She looked him straight in the eye. “Of course, Dornis, it will be much easier if you – ”

“Make the right decisions,” the Chieftain said. “Yes, I know. I’ll try to bear that in mind.” He smiled. “Now, to other matters. What has happened to us?”

“Yorvin uses another word for it,” she said. “Technology. But we know it as the Old Magic, the same that made your robes and the Aydoc. The black curtain has taken us to another place. I have no idea where we are and, from the looks of it, neither do Yorvin and the other sorcerers.”

“Yorvin?”

“Yes, he said his friends use that name for him. It seems wasteful to have three names when one is enough.”

“Be careful, Sharna. We know little of these people. They seem to be our friends but we do not know for sure. None of the other sorcerers address him by that name, so he is giving you a high honour in a short time. He may have other intentions.”

“He has a wife and children of his own. He would hardly have told me about them if he looked upon me in that way.”

Dornis ran a hand through his beard. “As I said, we know little of these people. We cannot know their intentions.”

She watched Yorvin working away at the rubble. Dornis was wrong.
