Tucker slammed the door of the interrogation room harder than he meant to, but he was angry. Angry that Riley hadn’t come to him in the beginning. Angry that Lucas was clearly trying to manipulate her again. Angry that this drama was coming between him and the woman he loved.

Yes. He loved her.

But now apparently, she was still married.

“Can I help you, sir?”

Tucker turned to the young intern who had taken him to Riley when he first arrived. His head hurt, and the buzzing office noise wasn’t helping.

“It’s Danielle, right?”

She nodded.

“I need to make a phone call. Is there somewhere private I can go?”

“I can put you in our conference room,” she said, motioning for him to follow her. “Would you like some coffee?”

“That would be great. Thank you.”

She took him to a small room with a long table and half a dozen chairs. It was a stark contrast from the interrogation room where Riley was currently sitting, where the entire setup was meant to keep suspects and persons of interest on edge.

He shut the door behind him and started to make the call then paused. He needed to take a few breaths. Figure out how in the world they’d gotten to this place. Ruby had told him that he needed to give Riley the benefit of the doubt, but at this point, he wasn’t sure he could do that. It was true that nothing about this was directly her fault. In fact, he was very aware that finding out Lucas was alive had been a shock to her. He got that. What he couldn’t understand was why she was so determined to defend Lucas.

Simply giving her grace right now wasn’t going to cut it. Not if she was going to blindly trust the man. He stepped in front of the large window that overlooked the back parking lot, needing to organize his thoughts. There were plenty of facts he did know. Like the fact that there was a connection between the millions that had been embezzled and Jace Krueger. Tucker’s team had found evidence that money from Lucas’s investment company had been laundered and then funneled into Krueger’s organization. That made sense.

Tucker himself had been involved in chasing Krueger and his network for months. He’d seen the havoc Krueger had wreaked. Seen the victims. Young girls who should be going to school and having fun with their friends, not being groomed and put up for sale. What they hadn’t been able to do was find Krueger. Every time authorities got close, the man managed to vanish and then reappear somewhere else. Usually with a new name, new identity, and new look. They didn’t even know what the man looked like.

And now Riley was telling him that Lucas wasn’t a part of the problem, but a hero. No. He wasn’t going to buy that. Not after everything Lucas had done to Riley. Tucker didn’t care what his reasons or excuses were. A man didn’t leave his wife in the dark like Lucas had done.
