When I arrive at the farm, there are no fences or guards around. Itâs just crops, silos, and a house. My gut clenches. Deep down, I know this isnât right. I shouldnât be pushing anyone out of their home or killing them. I grab my automatic gun, hang it on my shoulder, and climb out of the vehicle.
An older man approaches me. He must be in his late fifties or early sixties. Heâs tall, thin, and not afraid of me. âMay I help you?â
I tilt my head toward the house. âWho owns this land?â
He narrows his gaze. âWeâre a sustainable farm and donât sell to big corporations.â
I scoff. âThatâs not what I asked. Our corporation only wants your land, and we have an offer for you.â
He gives me a disappointed look. âHow much are they paying you to do this job?â
I frown. Heâs supposed to beg for his life, shake, and even pee his pants, knowing I can execute him just for not doing what I say.
âWe can negotiate,â he insists.
Iâm startled by his boldness. âExcuse me?â
âSomeone promised you money to push us away or kill us. Iâll triple the pay if you turn around and leave us alone.â
Hereâs the kicker. My father has never given me money. Not unless I need it for a trip like this one. I donât get paid for anything. He just provides me with food. The clothes I own were bought with Derekâs money before he left. I should take his offer and leave, but then my father will send his crew and kill everyone here.
I take a second glance at the old man and swallow. He doesnât deserve to die because of an entitled asshole, but I canât help him.
âSomething tells me your employer doesnât pay you enough to do this job.â
âListen, old man. I need you to get out. I would hate to kill you or any of your family because you canâtââ
âWhat did you used to do before you came to work for these men?â He studies me. âWere you in the Army, or was it the Navy?â
This man is supposed to shake and beg me for his life. Heâs supposed to leave, not ask me questions or make me offers. I should threaten him, point my gun at him. But instead, I say, âI canât remember.â
âI bet you were a good person, but life pushed you in the wrong direction.â I stare at him, wondering how he came up with that conclusion.
âHow old are you? Twenty-five?â
I shrug because, at this point, I have no fucking idea of how old I am or who Iâm supposed to be.
âCan I help you?â he asks.
And fuck, Iâm disarmed by his kindness. âJust leave. I donât want to hurt you.â
âInstead, why donât you let me help you get away from this bad situation, son?â
I scoff. âIf I do, Iâll have to keep running the rest of my life.â
He nods. âThatâs a possibility, but there are multiple options.â
âYeah?â
He extends his hand. âMy name is Charles Gil.
