CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The watchtower
In the dead of night, Gordgáin fighters stood guard around the village. Concealed in shadows, trees and nooks, others remained in plain sight watching for vampires. They were on alert for any disturbance that may trigger an ambush. It was a blue evening, thick with mist that swirled in the moon’s rays.
Renauart waited outside the temple for the “all clear” signal from Gralam, who stood unprotected beneath a lamppost in the village centre. The old, hairy warlock stared toward Sansul Fortress with great dislike as he smoked his pipe.
“Are you sure Mathias cannot come with us?” Adrianna asked Mathena as they walked from the trapdoor, down the length of the temple and stopped at Renauart’s side.
“He is still too weak. He cannot produce a strong enough fire-sphere and he cannot remember many of the important spells necessary in a fight,” Mathena said reasonably. “Rest and recovery is what Mathias needs, not a battle.”
“I know, but he wants to fight with us,” said Adrianna.
“There will be other opportunities,” said Mathena.
“Mathena is it wise to wear such high heeled shoes?” asked Renauart as he rolled back the embroidered sleeves of his shirt.
“We may be in a crisis Renauart, but that is no excuse to wear flats,” she replied as Adrianna looked at her feet. Beneath the skirts of her summer dress, she wore purple high heels that matched her nails. “Besides, my husband could be waiting for me in that watchtower and I intend for him to see me at my best. Now, are we ready to go?”
“Gralam just signalled.”
“So the pair before us arrived safely?” asked Mathena.
“There have been no disruptions all night. Follow the path directly to the watchtower,” he said.
“How many more after us?” Adrianna asked him.
“You are the third pair so, five more to go. Be careful.”
Adrianna followed Mathena along the gravel path, passing many concealed Gordgáin, and even a pair of Maquis soldiers. She noticed Mathena was on high alert; her eyes constantly scanned the area. Her fingers were flexed, as if she was prepared to fight at any moment, her strides were long and fast.
Gralam inclined his head as they passed. “Look sharp.”
Adrianna grew vaguely aware of a small, glowing object buzzing around her face before it touched her nose. “Whoa!” She swatted the air around her head. The little thing dodged her hand, making her seem quite insane to onlookers. “What is this thing? Go away!”
Mathena laughed at her. “It is a firefly,” she said, extending her hand to it. “See, it follows heat. It just wants to be around friends.”
Panting and completely flustered, Adrianna whipped her hair from her face and stared at Mathena in disbelief. “Mathena, it is a fly,” she said. “It is annoying. Why are you holding it? For goodness sake, fireflies set fire to hay when they land on it.”
“When you capture them in jars or lanterns, they give off light,” said Mathena. “All creatures serve a purpose.”
“Well, you keep it. Come on, we’re almost there.”
“Don’t listen to her,” Mathena said to the fly.
