Why should I work from the inside out?
Working from the inside out accomplishes two aims. First and foremost, you are asking those with the best reasons to give. When youâre looking to build new relationships, nothing speaks higher of your organization than the solid support of those who are already engaged. This is precisely why board members should be the âleadâ donors in any organization. They do not necessarily have to be the largest donors, but they must always be the first.
The paid staff members of your organization are the other âmost insideâ group. These individuals draw their livelihood from the organization and have, perhaps, the most vested interest. A high level of donor participation among the staff of your organization builds commitment and esprit de corps like nothing else. As with other donors, itâs all about commensurate givingâwhat is possible and appropriate for each person.
Employee solicitation, although straightforward, is operationally specific and distinct, requiring appropriate training. If your organization has never approached staff members for gifts in a systematic and comprehensive way, bringing in an outside consultant or experienced development officer might serve you well. You want your first effort of staff solicitation to be a positive experience for all involved.
