At Pine Hill, she awakes at ten thirty Wednesday night, startled by the dogâs barking and a persistent pounding on the door. Her heart leaps into action, hammering as hard as the person wanting in. She sniffs, wondering if the house is on fire and Lyle has come to warn her.
In her robe, she peers out the small window in the door. Helen looks back at her, making her laugh out loud. She opens to her. âGod, you scared me. What a surprise.â
Helen kisses her on the mouth. âI came right from work. I was afraid Jay would show up with the kids if I waited till morning.â
She glances out the door but she canât see Helenâs car.
âI parked by the garage,â Helen explains.
âOh. Do you think Jay might find you?â
âHe donât know how to get here.â
Wide awake, she asks, âWant something to eat or drink?â
Helen has a small roll-type suitcase with her. âI just want to go to bed. With you.â She pulls it toward the bedroom. âAre you coming?â
âI have to use the john.â She wants to brush her teeth. âYou go ahead.â
âIâll wait. I have to go too.â
Helen comes to bed wearing a nightshirt with cats on it.
Ellie grins. âYou look so wholesome.â
âDonât be fooled by the cats.â
In a minute or two, sheâs looking up at Helen through a curtain of red hair. âYou donât waste any time.â
âWant me to show you what women do to women or do you want to show me?â
Immediately taken back to Helenâs basement, she recalls the hand between her legs, the tongue in her mouth, the disabling excitement. She shrugs out of the memory. She wants to participate, not to observe. Still, part of her watches, amazed that she is in bed with Helen, doing what sheâs doing.
Itâs not like it was when they were kids, though. Thereâs a searching tenderness that wasnât there then. No one is going to call them on this right now. No mothers or fathers to answer to. The explaining will be to their children and will come later if the intimacy grows into a relationship.
She asks Helen how they can make this more than a once a week occurrence.
âYou can come to my place, thatâs how.â
âDonât you think thatâs a little risky with Jay already suspicious?â
Helen throws an arm and leg over her. âLetâs sleep on it.â
However, sleep evades her. She lies awake, trying not to flop around too much. Her thoughts go back to the time Helen lived next door. When Donny came along, Helen latched onto him like a life jacket. It never occurred to her that Helen might be more interested in her some day. Aside from those few times in the basement, which she now understands had more to do with control than sex, Helen seemed headed toward a strictly heterosexual life and she went on to marry Will. It makes her wonder if this is for real or just an experiment.
She rolls away from Helen and finally falls asleep, only to waken in the morning to Helenâs touch.
