CHAPTER 9
The next morning Brandon and Angi located Mr. Hawthorne at the designated meeting place for the lighthouse tour.
âI had hoped to conduct this tour myself.â Jacob Hawthorne ran a hand through thinning hair. âBut something has come up that requires my immediate attention. I do hope you wonât mind if I ask one of our staff to accompany you.â
âOf course not.â Brandon wondered what new catastrophe had arisen for the poor man. âSo long as they know the history.â
âI can assure you each staff member is well-versed in the Harbor Pointe Lighthouseâs history.â He motioned toward Jeremiah Hatcher, who hurried over. âYouâve met Jerry?â
Brandon cleared his throat, aware of Angi stiffening next to him. âSure. He fixed the light in our bathroom.â He stuck out his hand. âGood to see you again, Jerry.â
âLikewise.â Jerry shook Brandonâs hand, while undressing Angi with his eyes.
The hair raised on the back of Brandonâs neck when the man flashed her an oily smile. Prick!
Mr. Hawthorne cleared his throat. âThese folks are ready for their lighthouse tour.â
âHappy to oblige, Iâll lead the way.â
âReady, Angi?â Brandon put a possessive arm around her waist.
She nodded. âI suppose.â
He didnât miss the way she leaned into him. No doubt Jerry made her uncomfortable. But she had to realize she was a beautiful woman and men were going to look. At the same time, there were lines one didnât cross. Heâd keep an eye on Hatcher.
As they turned to leave, Felicia Hawthorne bustled toward the group. âMr. Miller. Ms. Cooper. Iâve had a break in my schedule. Iâd be more than happy to escort you through the lighthouse.â
Disappointment flashed across the handymanâs face. âI donât mind.â
She waved him away. âIâll take it from here. Room 104 has a water leak. I need you to tend to it.â
âWonderful.â Angiâs relief registered in her voice, as Hatcher stomped away.
âThanks, Mrs. Hawthorne. Weâd be honored.â Brandon stepped back. âPlease call us Brandon and Angela. Itâs much less formal.â He waved his hand. âAfter you.â
While they covered the distance between the inn and the lighthouse, Felicia Hawthorne chatted about the wild roses that flanked the path as well as some of the very earliest history of the inn. âThis place was originally established to accommodate the miners that flocked to this area in search of gold. We have family records dating all the way back to the beginning.â
âAnd when was that? The beginning?â Brandon asked.
âWhen Isaac Hawthorne arrived here in search of gold, around 1848.â
âDid he strike it rich?â Angi moved closer.
âHe did. With his newfound wealth, he decided to purchase this land and build a hotel. He had visions of this area becoming another San Francisco because of the shipping point. And it did boom for a while.â
âUntil the gold rush ended,â Brandon inserted. âBut Hawthorne stayed.â
âHe did. By then, heâd fallen in love with a local woman named Cordelia, and they married.â
âIs the portrait in the lobby of Isaac Hawthorne?â Angi inquired.
âIt is. Some say his eyes will follow you as you move around the room.
