Four hours later, Mallory stepped into the containment area of the Hard Line offices, which was below ground. The series of cells were all designed to contain various types of supernatural beings. There was a small front desk area where two guards were stationed. Four other guards manned the booking and main containment areas.
Mallory flashed his pass to the guards at the desk and was buzzed through. He took a short flight of stairs further down below the ground to the booking area.
âCreed.â The female seated behind the desk greeted. âWindstorm told me you were coming. Tomas is in tank three.â
He nodded. âThank you, Tally.â
âWindstorm said not to kill him,â she warned.
He gave her a flat stare. He had no intentions of killing Tomas. His main intentions were merely to ascertain who the man was working for. With the moles from Rafeâs enemies, Batten and Blade, two covens that had once been bad-assed beyond compare, not all identified, it was important to know if he was working for one of those groups or Red Wolf.
Mallory stepped into the cell area. The mid-size rooms were windowless and contained a small cot, a single chair, and square table outside the cell. The rooms were designed for torture as well as containing. He pulled the door of tank three open and stepped into the room. The lights were soft and fell into every corner, preventing shadows from falling.
Tomas turned his head, and the dark-skinned Cuban gave him a cold-eyed stare. He remained seated on the cot in a show of defiance.
âYou shouldnât be surprised.â
He shrugged. âYou and Windstorm arenât the smartest tacks in the pack,â he said coldly.
âI guess youâre one of Evanâs.â
Tomas didnât speak, and nothing in his expression gave anything away. âIâm not going to tell you anything,â he said, âabout anything except to say you wonât succeed this time. Youâre nowhere near as ruthless as Windstorm.â
Mallory shrugged broad shoulders. âRafe can be a coldly ruthless son of a bitch.â And Tomas didnât know the half of Rafeâs ferocity.
Tomas grunted and gave Mallory a suspicious stare when he unlocked the cell door then stepped back to grip the restraints that were secured in the ceiling.
âHe had this place built for effectiveness.â
Tomas got to his feet and moved to the cell door, keeping his gaze on Mallory the whole time. That told Mallory Tomas wasnât convinced Rafe was the only ruthless bastard within these walls. He was right to feel that way after the stunt heâd pulled.
âI donât want to kill you, Tomas,â Mallory said, giving the restraints a tug. âI just want answers, such as why lie?â
Tomas studied him. âAbout what?â
âWhat was going on outside last night.â
He shrugged.
âI know thereâs a hit on Magnusâs heirs, and I know theyâve narrowed it down to three,â Mallory said. âI just canât figure whoâs calling the shots though. Batten or Red Wolf.â
âThen why not just turn me over to the Witchâs Council?â
âIâm willing to do just that if I get the answers Iâm looking for.
