Eighteen tons of Blackwidow gunship hit the bitumen of the road at over one hundred miles per hour.

The helicopter disintegrated upon contact with the hard tarmac. The turbines separated from each other, spearing forward with several tons of ‘inevitability’ each, straight into the paths of the armored personnel carriers. The APC on the right took one of the turbines just inside the right front wheel and the chassis. The impact flipped the APC over onto its left side. It screeched along the road in a shower of sparks for another twenty yards before it encountered the miraculously intact fuel tank of the Blackwidow. The fuel tank promptly exploded in a blinding glare, greasy black smoke fountaining upward in a tall plume. The APC, burning furiously, ground its way into the nearest ditch.

The second APC was not as lucky as the first. The second turbine struck it end on like a giant’s fist punching through the front of the APC’s hull, obliterating the driver and half the crew as it disappeared somewhere into the belly of the vehicle. The APC careered blindly through the front half of the Blackwidow’s tumbling cabin, a canister of 70mm Hydra rockets flew through the gaping hole into the APC’s interior. The rockets instantly detonated in a colossal explosion, converting the APC into a cloud of burning metal confetti.

While the APCs were taking the brunt of the impact of the crashing Blackwidow, the crews of the three remaining MRAPs shadowing the MRU were attempting to evade as best they could. Shadowstone enhanced reflexes dragged on steering wheels, floored accelerators or slammed on brakes.

One of the trailing MRAPs, attempting to avoid flying helicopter debris, ran through the exploding second APC, evaporating itself in a gray-black cloud of burning metal. The second trailing MRAP pulled wide, accelerating snake-like between the two APC wrecks, directly into half the armored hull of the Blackwidow. The MRAP flipped vertically into the air, looping over itself before landing on its roof in the middle of the road, its wheels spinning wildly in the air.

The leading MRAP accelerated up to the MRU, a stray section of rotor blade shearing through the M240 mount on its roof. The machine gun fell away, joining the wave of destruction taking out everyone else behind them.

Streaming forward at sixty-five miles per hour, the MRU, trailed by the single surviving MRAP, left the burning wreckage in its wake.

Peter dropped to a prone position, his eyes flashing with excitement. He said brightly, “I told you I’d be on time.”

Grinning with a mixture of relief and joy, Anton slapped Peter’s shoulder. He shrugged out of the over-sized battle vest and handed it to Peter.

Peter pursed his lips, his eyes shining. “Beautiful.”

The team was back together again.
