Three days had passed since the explosion between Leila and Dragunov, and Leila’s daily tranquil routine of practicing through her stances toned down the Phoenix, but their leader’s absence and her disheartened mood dragged the men down. Alek wasn’t his peppy, charming, snide-remark-making self; Silvestrov remained in the kitchen and rarely picked at Alek; and the Chubais twins seldom showed themselves. Only Ruben seemed unaffected, playing his guitar on the porch.

One evening, Leila was left alone with Dragunov.

Alek explained. “About the third week of every month, we all return to our families. Every now and then, one of us checks in to make sure we’re not needed. We’ll be back soon though.” He patted her arm before walking out into the night, and Leila felt lonelier than before. Now no one provided presence; even though she didn’t socialize much, the men being there gave the house essence.

Like burning heartburn, the Phoenix rose, angry at everyone for abandoning her. Leila went to calm herself in the workout room; once finished, she would lock herself away in her room like Dragunov below.
