Paddy slowly regained consciousness.

It felt like he was swimming up to the surface from the depths of a dark lake.

He was alive! He realised he must have passed out when Elton pulled up – the last thing he remembered was the incredible force with which he was pressed down into the dragon’s talon as Elton tried to come out of his dive.

Paddy felt a hot breath. Opening his eyes, he looked up into the face of the green dragon. Elton was examining him, studying the boy with his huge, emerald green eyes. Paddy smiled at him, his nervousness now gone.

“Hello boy,” he said. “We’ve named you Elton. How do you like it?”

The dragon snickered softly. A low rumble came from deep within the creature, like the purring of a gigantic cat.

Suddenly, Elton lifted his head and scanned the sky. Looking past him, Paddy saw what Elton had heard – the two helicopters were descending down towards them, fast.

“We need to go, Elton. Go!” he commanded.

He rolled to his feet.

Paddy didn’t hesitate. He clambered up onto Elton’s back, trying to figure out where he might sit. There was no time to get comfortable.

He sat astride the dragon’s neck, wriggling up far enough to grab Elton’s spines in both hands. Then, he hauled on them, hoping the dragon would respond.

Underneath him, Paddy felt Elton’s muscles bunch, then uncoil as he sprang into the air, his mighty wings beating furiously. It was terrifying and terrific all at once, and he held on as tightly as he could, gripping the dragon’s neck with his knees. Upwards they flew, circling around and around to gain height. He saw the helicopters immediately change course to give chase.

When Elton came level with the cliff top, there was Flynn, dwarfed by the giant female dragon standing behind him.

“Looks like you've made a new friend,” yelled Paddy, smiling at his brother. “But I think we’d better go!”

The helicopters were coming fast. Paddy could see the co-pilots opening their doors and leaning out. They were connected to the machines by a harness, leaving their hands free to hold large and powerful rifles. Those rifles were now pointed at the brothers.

“Time to go,” said Paddy. “Jump!”

Paddy could see Flynn was horrified at the thought of launching himself off the cliff, but there was nothing else for it. With his knees Paddy tried to guide Elton in the same way they did with Clappers, and the dragon seemed to understand.

He flew closer to the cliff edge.

Paddy watched Flynn take a few steps back to get a run up. Then, yelling in fear, he threw himself off the cliff, landing off-balance on Elton’s broad back and scrambling to stay on. Paddy reached out an arm and managed to steady him, and Flynn clambered up to sit behind him, grabbing him around the waist. Paddy could feel his brother’s hands trembling like crazy.

Behind them, the sound of the nearest helicopter was deafening. Paddy could feel the wind from its rotor blades.

“Hang on,” he yelled as he felt Elton’s wings tilt and draw in.
