Flynn and Paddy barely had the strength to stagger up the beach and collapse in the dunes. It was lucky that it was a warm night, as both boys were chilled to the core from their hours in the sea. They clung together to keep warm and fell into a fitful, restless sleep.

When Paddy awoke, the first thing he saw was Lightning. The falcon sat motionless, just inches from his face, regarding him with a suspicious eye. This boy wasn’t about to disappear again, was he?

Paddy rolled over and shook Flynn.

“What! Who is it?” Flynn yelled, sitting bolt upright. There was sand all over his face and several long strands of seaweed clung to his hair. He looked like some sort of sea monster.

Paddy laughed. “You’ll have to get cleaned up before we head into town. You look awful.”

Flynn rubbed his hands over his face. “You don’t look so hot yourself.”

Paddy wasn’t surprised. He was still exhausted from their ordeal.

The boys stood up and brushed the debris off themselves. Their shirts and shorts were dirty and torn, and still damp. They had bruises and cuts from being caught up in the disintegrating boat and were blistered from the salt water and sunburn.

“We’re going to make an entrance, that’s for sure,” said Flynn.

Lightning fluttered up to Flynn’s shoulder and fell asleep; his watch duty was over for now.

The boys made their way to the top of the sand dunes. When they got there, the first thing they saw was a road – something they’d never seen before. They stood looking at it in utter astonishment. Finally, they stepped onto it, feeling the texture with their feet.

“It’s like a super-long rock,” said Paddy.

Then, they did what any person would do. They followed it.

The road wound its way up the hillside above the beach to the top of a ridge. It was steep, and the boys were soon breathing heavily. As they crested the hill, they halted in astonishment. Paddy opened his mouth to say something, but no sound came out. He simply stood and stared.

As far as the eye could see, buildings covered the plain below. Houses were spread up and down the coast, while further inland there were clusters

of factories and warehouses. In the distance, high-rise office towers marked what they figured was the city centre. It seemed incredible to the boys that people had been responsible for altering the landscape so completely.

Just then, the silence was broken by an awful noise – a growing roar, and a series of loud bangs. A car rounded a corner and came chugging up the road towards them. It was the first car the boys had ever seen – a beaten-up station wagon, with smoke pouring out of its exhaust. As it came closer, the boys could see at the wheel a young man with long hair and a beard, his elbow poking out of the rolled-down driver’s window. Strapped to the roof was a long, slightly curved wooden plank with rounded ends. Three things shaped like dolphins' fins were stuck to one end.
