CHAPTER 1
Loxfar Estate
304th day of the 1st year of King Kenshaâs Reign
âAre you sure you want to go?â Holly said, instantly becoming distracted.
Her head swiveled to the left. Her mother's tone came out. âBy the gods, Sapphire, I told you to leave that boy alone!â
Our daughter was in her young teens, chasing older boys as if they were in short supply. I snickered seeing her blush from Hollyâs words.
âCome here, Sapphire Loxfar,â I said, issuing a rare command to one of my children.
The boy smartly bolted, realizing I had drawn an interest in their conversation. Sapphire had my brown hair, her mother's high cheeks, and very yellow eyes. She was growing up so fast. During the same period, Iâd only aged a single year since her birth.
Holly had a favorite. Of our four, Sapphire was her little darling, and I was told all facets of her life. In reality, all I wanted to know was if she finally registered on the magical aptitude test.
Ironically Cleo reported she was going to be an ice mage at the very least, and on the same day the young woman had her first bleed. Almerian magic left me so perplexed. Endless research only opened up more questions while partially closing doors.
âYes, Father,â Sapphire said, hands neatly folded in front of her. She wore a school uniform that didnât hide her slight tail or smaller second ears.
I⦠I struggled with that term. Sure I was her father, but I wasnât her supportive parent. Even though she got a few perks, she was still kept at bay.
âIâm leaving. Iâm taking your mother with me. I -â
Holly stuck her hands on her hips. âWait, you are?â
âYes.â
Holly flustered red while Sapphire fidgeted, uncertain as to why she was summoned. I flicked a finger up, forcing my daughter to meet my eyes.
âYouâre a woman now. Act like it. If I hear you caused trouble, Iâll have you lashed, and dungeoned,â I said sternly.
Sapphire didnât gasp, pout, or cry.
âYa mean it?â she said. Not caring one bit about repercussions. She just wanted to be noticed as a young lady.
âYes, Sapphire,â I said, reaching into my robes to retrieve two rolled pieces of parchment.
One had a white ribbon, the other yellow. They contained very different messages and I was certain the yellow went to my daughter and the white one to my wife.
âIâm officially Lady Sapphire of Loxfar dated this day -â
âYou did not,â Holly said, squinting her eyes in a scowl. Yeah her message was definitely not a jump up and down affair.
âEverything okay, Mother?â Sapphire said.
Holly stuffed her parchment into her bust before hugging her daughter. âConsider yourself blessed you have such a wonderful father. Most daughters do not get a lady title until they are mature enough to court boys. Which you are not.â
I cleared my throat. âI must admit, your mother is correct. No courting boys, men, women, fey, or anything. Study your magic while Iâm away. Read that parchment carefully. I can and will lash you if you disobey me or stray from your studies.
