Em woke the next morning, book on the pillow beside her head, light still on. Sitting up, Em reached to turn off the light and heard “Good morning” from the chair near the window. Emlen groaned and tucked a pillow behind her. “I’m going to ward my room against ghosts unless I want company,” she grumbled.

Tina laughed, “Yeah, you might want to do that. I’ve been sitting here forever, waiting for you to wake up.”

“Wait, that’s something I can do? I’ll call Susan, maybe she can help.”

“Ha, ha. Anyway, ask Elise if you can borrow her sapphire bracelet. It belonged to me and it will act as an anchor so I can come with you this weekend. Your mom also wants you to take the Brewster Band with you, for the same reason.”

“Uh huh. Sapphire bracelet. Brewster ring. Got it,” Emlen scrubbed her face with her hands, then got out of bed. “I need to wash up and get coffee. Is there something else?”

“Yeah. Ask Elise about her brother, Edmund.”

“She didn’t tell me about a brother, just her sister, Elaine.”

“Yeah, well, he’s a senator from Connecticut and he’s a magic user.”

Emlen stuck her head out of the bathroom and stared at Tina. “He’s a what?”

“He uses magic,” Tina said. “He’s good with earth and air elements. And no, Elise doesn’t know that about him. She thinks he’s weird because he’s gay.”

Emlen snorted laughter and ducked back into the bathroom, finishing her morning routine. “I’ll ask her about him over breakfast. Thanks, Tina. And I’ll get the bracelet so you can come along.”

“Good deal,” Tina replied before fading away.
