Shaw picked his next words very carefully. The last thing he desired was to incriminate Natalie and send her on a path that mirrored his own.

“Natalie Hale?” he repeated, not providing evidence of recognition yet not denying it either. Walker laughed, picking up on Shaw’s play.

“Listen, I understand what I’m asking of you. I’m asking you to trust me,” Walker said, rising up on his toes only to drop back down again to stress his point. “And I know that’s like asking the mouse to trust the cat, but I believe, after my long discussion with Ms. Hale, that you were justified, militarily so, in your actions against Weber.” Shaw simply stared at Walker, and Walker let Shaw’s mind work. Is he just saying this to get to me? Shaw wondered. How do I know this isn’t a trick? He wondered how he could determine Walker’s sincerity without confirming Natalie’s involvement.

“Well, it sounds to me that your mind is already made up. If you wouldn’t mind undoing these restraints, I’ll be on my way,” Shaw said. Walker laughed and bounced a slender finger toward Shaw.

“That’s not how this works,” he joked. Shaw smirked. “But I can see you need more from me.” Shaw simply watched him. Walker glanced around quickly, almost spastically until he found the object of his search. His hand palmed the seat of the round doctor’s chair and wheeled it to Shaw’s bedside. He dropped his lightweight body onto the seat and set his chin into his fist. “Ms. Hale shared some interesting story points with me solely to establish my credibility with you. What I’m about to share with you can only be known by Ms. Hale, and if that checks out, will you trust me?” Shaw thought for a moment but showed no signs of agreement or recognition. To do so was to confirm his connection to Natalie, and that was something he couldn’t risk. However, if Walker truly wanted to help, confirming that he had spoken with Natalie of her own accord was a good place to start. Taking Shaw’s silence as a yes, Walker rubbed his hands together quickly as he prepared to share the specific details he knew.

“You owned a sailboat named American Rhetor, now I recognize that this information is easily obtained by someone in my position, but for three months, you sailed the Caribbean with Ms. Hale, dove the Three Fathom Wall off the coast of Cayman Little, shared a dinner at The Wharf restaurant in George Town, and made plans for an Atlantic crossing to sail the islands of Greece.” Walker grinned and winked. Shaw’s wide eyes immediately betrayed his position.

“You did talk to her,” Shaw reasoned. Walker nodded. “You told me that you needed me to tell my story, to fill in the gaps, but you obviously know more that you let on.”

“I do.”

“Then what are you doing here?”

“Did you kill Linus Weber?” Walker asked. Shaw chewed his cheek and looked away.

“Yes,” he muttered. Walker nodded slowly. “But that was never in question,” Shaw added.
