Vandal closed the book he had found among the bandit plunder and tossed it aside. There was no printing technology in Ramda, meaning every book was hand-copied. That made them expensive, luxury items. But the story of the illustrious deeds of the founders of the Amidd Empire, the hero Bellwood and the first Emperor Balshumit, wasn’t worth a single copper coin for Vandal.

To start, there couldn’t possibly be proof that the first emperor of the Amidd Empire was a direct descendent of the hero. The span of time involved was tens of thousands of years. The book called it fate, a prophetic dream, or a visit from the phantom of the hero himself, but that was all just theatrics.

Next, it made him so jealous that he felt sick. The hero Bellwood—his name had probably been “Suzuki” in Japanese, which would literally be “bell” and “wood”—arrived in Ramda and immediately got some crazy cheat powers. He defeated a dragon in just ten days and became a dragon-slaying hero while also saving a princess. After one month, six months, he continued to prove himself in battle, becoming a mighty hero in the span of ten years.

Vandal couldn’t help but compare himself to that.

He had been alive for one year and three months. The only woman he had ever talked to was his mother. He couldn’t hope to become a hero, even in ten long years. He was sure Suzuki had struggled and suffered, in his own way, and he had survived a fight for his life. But the difference between receiving blessings from the gods and receiving curses felt so painfully large.

“This is all Rodocolte’s fault.”

That’s true. The god Rodocolte. But I’m a little grateful to him too. He’s the one who make you my baby, Vandal.

“Mom…”

Her words soothed his bristling heart. He had to admit, making Dalshia his mother was maybe the one thing he could thank Rodocolte for.

However, without Rodocolte’s curses, Vandal would have been able to use death attribute magic just like he had before dying on Origin. He would have been able to control countless golems, countless spirits, turning whole lakes into poison and poison into pure water whenever he pleased. With these powers, Dalshia wouldn’t have needed to die. That thought made his gratitude evaporate.

As he pondered these thoughts, the wagon suddenly stopped its stealthy progress.

“What now?”

His Detect Danger: Death magic told him that this wasn’t an emergency situation, such as being surrounded by enemies or faced with powerful monsters. This magic could detect not only things like poisonous mushrooms and plants, but also the intent to kill radiating from monsters and humans.

So he knew this wasn’t a dangerous situation, but…Vandal poked his head out from the wagon and saw a gate leading underground.

“A gate? A hideout used by more bandits? But it looks pretty well made. Some kind of ruins?” Vandal tilted his head.

The Cursed Carriage Sam told him what this was.

Master, I believe this is a dungeon.

“A dungeon?”
