Author's Note

"The Day They Brought the Bears to Belfast," is a true story. But you knew that.

More than being a true story, though, it's a story based on an actual event, the First Ever Belfast Maine Bearfest, that happened during the summer of 2002. My husband and I drove down to Belfast one July day, to meet my brother- and sister-in-law for lunch. They were up from Maryland, we came over from Waterville—and none of us knew that there would be bears involved.

We had a super time, and it wasn't until we were getting ready leave for home, having spent a good deal of the afternoon spying out and counting the bears in the city, like Katy and Jeremy, that we saw the Bear that had been tied to one of the three grouped pilings, just out from the tiny beach.

Who on earth would put a bear in the tide like that? was my first thought.

And so, I wrote a story, to find out.
