Chapter Ten

Amber left Jordan and Tyler to go their separate ways. They had arranged to meet at midnight at the Danger sign near the Beaker Ravine. Amber said she would collect Brooke at the agreed time and would text the guys if there was a problem or a delay.

However, for the rest of the day, Amber was trying to come up with a good enough excuse to tell Sean as to why she was leaving the house at eleven at night. She couldn't come up with anything. He would still be awake at that time, watching television; some late-night comedy show. It would be almost impossible to sneak out without him noticing. She had to think of something and then find somewhere to lay low for a few hours.

Amber couldn't help but wonder what Sean would say and think when the truth finally came out. She feared the worst; he could divorce her and stop her from seeing Bethany. That would be the end of her life. Maybe he would understand if she told him the whole truth now, before it came out in the news and was plastered all over the television screen. 'Um, no … I just have a lot on my mind.'

Sean casually took a sip of wine. 'Like what?'

Amber paused briefly. It was now or never. 'I need to go somewhere tonight.'

Sean did a sarcastic chuckle. In the time he had known her she had never been out during the evening. 'Like where?'

'I … I need to visit my mum.' It was all she could come up with in that exact moment. Her mother lived about an hour away and in all honesty, she had been thinking about visiting her soon. It had been a while; nearly six months in fact. Amber wasn't exactly close to her mother anymore, but she still liked to do the occasional visit and phone call. However, her mother didn't make a lot of effort to come and visit her either. Her mother and father had moved away from the town several years ago, leaving the seclusion and instead headed for civilisation.

'I'll leave soon and come back later tonight,' added Amber.

'You're only going to go for a few hours? Why?'

'I need to ask her something.'

'That's what a phone is for.'

Amber was losing this battle and Sean's constant questioning was starting to get her back up. He had always been like it, never in a
