Chapter 28
Camp Winter, Alleghany National Forest, Pennsylvania
Seventeen days after America went dark
At the same time as Lizzy was being comforted by Eric, Lucas stepped out of the front door of the mess hall, putting his hand above his eyes to shield them from the sun. Heâd awoken early, his sleep the previous night coming in fits and starts. At least three times heâd ventured down the hallway to peek in on Kari and in each case, sheâd remained asleep, relatively peaceful and motionless on her bed.
Heâd contemplated waking her at the early hour that heâd awoken himself, but elected to let her sleep, though he had taken a moment to feel her forehead. It felt a bit warm, but not hot and he decided the next dose of antibiotics could wait until she awoke. He left the cabin, taking a walk around the perimeter of the camp, quietly scrutinizing security, building placement, activity, all manner of data points that he quietly filed away and organized for possible future use. Lucas had been an engineer in the Army, not intelligence or surveillance, but heâd spent enough time on the battlefield to be able to perform the most rudimentary human intelligence and spent time doing just that.
After his walk, heâd stopped in the mess hall, but hadnât had breakfast, electing to just have a cup of coffee, sitting at a quiet table in the corner and watching who came in and went out, how they were equipped, what they discussed and who was paired with whom.
Everything seemed remarkablyâ normal. He didnât notice any major differences from when heâd been here before, and that was prior to a landscape-shifting EMP detonating throughout the eastern United States.
Was Camp Winter really that well prepared that they could just continue operations as if nothing had happened? Finishing his coffee, heâd left the mess hall and now found himself standing outside, scanning the surrounding area, looking at the scattered structures that made up that section of the camp.
To his left was a large, prefab building, something that looked like an oversized utility shed and as he looked at it, he saw a figure approaching, walking from the direction of the building.
Lucas closed his fists, squeezing his fingers tightly closed, watching as Steve Selkirk made his way toward him. He hadnât run into Steve since coming back this latest time, and to be honest, heâd been totally fine with that. Seeing the man just brought back bad memories of the quiet conversation heâd heard between him and his father, the conversation that had completely changed the outcome of his life.
While heâd always been leaning toward leaving Camp Winter at an early age, it was the revelation about Steve, his father and the death of his mother that had tipped him over the edge and sent him on the path his life had taken over the past two decades.
âLucas,â Steve said with a curt nod. âIâd heard you made your way back here.â
Lucasâs chest tightened the moment he saw Steve, but he forced a narrow grin and nodded his head in greeting.
