Gulp! Splosh! Splash! Batten down the dangermobile’s

hatches and let’s paddle for our lives. This section of the

Congo River is the most dangerous stretch of white water

in the world. Water rushes downstream at close to 50 km/h

(31 mph) and creates waterfalls and whirlpools that can pull

even the sturdiest boats underwater in seconds.

In the 1800s Portuguese

explorers called these

rapids the ‘Cauldron of Hell’.

Rapids like this are created when the path of a river drops in height and

forces the flow of water to speed up and rush around any obstacles on the

riverbed. As the water bumps over and around rocks, the turbulence adds

air to the water making it froth and foam white. Each specific movement of

water in white-water rapids has a name - we need to watch out for strainers,

sweepers, holes, waves, pillows, eddies and sieves!
