Remedying defects in cavity trays can be particularly difficult due to the need to work in short sections, so as to avoid structural damage to the wall. Such work needs care and experience, as well as a clear understanding of the structural implications. For most situations, reliable and experienced local builders will have the appropriate skills, but the larger problems may well warrant the advice of a building surveyor, architect or structural engineer. Repairing tray ends at each side of an opening is usually simpler because access can be made beyond the bearings of the lintel. For retro-fitting awkward cavity tray details within the grubby confines of a cavity, it may prove simpler to either use the pre-formed tray components available from DPC manufacturers, or to use lead sheet, which can be worked and shaped to deal with the less conventional situations.
