Build Belief in Your Ability
Confidence can be developed if you are willing to examine how you view yourself, and if you learn ways to think and act confidently. By strengthening your self-esteem, building belief in your skills, and cultivating trust, you will believe in your ability to compete.
Reflect
• Optimal confidence is obtained when you hold a strong belief in your ability to execute the skills required to perform successfully.
• Being confident will not only enhance your performance, it will also positively influence motivation, concentration, anxiety management, and how you deal with adversity.
• The three elements required to sustain competition confidence are self-esteem, self-efficacy, and trust.
• You can build the foundations of confidence and consolidate your self-esteem by being the author of your story, accepting who you are, no longer looking sideways, and transforming your inner critic into your coach.
• If you manage expectations, maximise training, understand winning thinking, embrace feedback, and compete with a plan, you can gain and sustain belief in your ability to compete.
• You will trust in yourself and your skills when you are able to take control in critical moments, and maintain composure prior to performing.
• Commit to developing confidence so that you can pursue challenges. Be willing to risk short-term failure for longer-term success. Use your inner coach to direct you to your best performance.
