Chapter fifteen
Ameliaâs shoulders clenched at the audacity of Mr. Blackwellâs voice. She stopped walking. She didnât turn toward him. She didnât know what to do or say, and she hated feeling helpless.
âPlease forgive me. Iâm not accustomed to rejection. I donât handle it well.â
She noticed a little surliness in his expression and tone. It surprised her that heâd gotten irritable, especially after the showdown with a dozen men with guns. Amelia spun around and walked toward him. âI got a feeling that students tracking you down while carrying guns wasnât something new for you.â
âYouâd be correct.â
âThen why did you hand out guns like people pass out Halloween candy?â
âWalk with me.â He started down the pathway.
Amelia felt compelled to do so, not because he requested it, but because she thought he might give her more information about this place, his intentions, or valuable intel she might regret not learning about later.
âI dispense guns,â Mr. Blackwell said, âbecause Americans are obsessed with control. They want to protect themselves and their loved ones, because they have the false notion that owning one or more guns will keep them safe.â
To her knowledge, Ameliaâs parents didnât own a gun, although her tÃo and tÃa, who now watched after her siblings, owned them. A pang of unease swept through her; a helplessness that made her want to call them to make sure her siblings were okay.
What if something did happen to them? They wouldnât be able to get in touch to let me know. Iâd be stuck here, oblivious. For two months!
âFalse notion?â Amelia repeated to get herself back on track.
Mr. Blackwell nodded. âAmerica was founded upon violence. To gain their independence, they fought the British. Then they roamed across America, taking what they wanted by use of force, by control.â
Amelia immediately felt as though sheâd been attacked. But she was more curious about his personal stance on the issue, in light of recent events, than about her duty as an American to support the justification for the Second Amendment. Sheâd always support that amendment, despite having no interest in ever owning a gun.
âControl,â Mr. Blackwell repeated. âThatâs why there is so much gun violence in America. That need is encoded in the DNA of every American. Giving students guns will make them feel like they have some control over their circumstances. But as you saw a little while ago, it is an illusion.
âIf I gave each person a knife, they wouldnât feel as much in control. They couldnât hurt each other from afar. They would need to get up close, look into each otherâs eyes, and strike multiple blows. With blood spilling, and by possibly getting hurt themselves, they might be reluctant to finish the job. Animosity, distrust, and fear would run rampant on campus. Confidence among the unscrupulous would rise, while those with morals would be less inclined to use knives. And without a more lethal weapon to work up to, like the aforementioned guns, a massacre might ensue, resulting in a total loss of control.
