The mothersâ attitudes towards the position of women
The position of women in India has changed considerably since the 1950âs, where both structural and cultural changes have provided equality of opportunities to women in education, employment and political participation. Additionally, women have been encouraged to develop their own organisations which take a keen interest in their problems (Ahuja 1994). However, despite the increasing incidence of higher education amongst both males and females and rapidly increasing urbanisation and industralisation changing the family structure and social values (Kalra 1980), the general attitude towards women is not greatly changed (Pothen 1987).
Table 5.4 examines whether the respondents felt that there were differences between Asian and British values regarding the independence of women, and shows, as anticipated, that the vast majority of the sample held the opinion that Asian women were less independent than their British counterparts. Significantly, none of the mothers replied that Asian women had greater independence. These results echo those of other studies over the years (Jeffrey 1976, Wilson 1978, Stopes-Roe and Cochrane 1990, Joly 1995), which have produced similar findings regarding the position of Asian women.
