I leaned forward on Jovian’s lap so I could get a better look at the drawings that Calypso had pulled out. She explained that they were maps. It wasn’t something I was familiar with. Calypso said that the drawings were of the community. As she started to point out buildings and landmarks the maps started to make sense.

“So, here along this border is where the girls are released,” Calypso said pointing at the southern point of the community. I knew those woods well. I had spent hours in them when I was a child. It was along that wall, that I had heard the voices of people. “There is a community just beyond that wall”.

“I remember hearing voices when I was a child and would play there,” I said.

Calypso smiled. “I bet you thought they were the monsters.”

I bit my bottom lip and nodded my head. I did. I could never make out what the voices were saying, as they were too far away to hear clearly.

“The town is called Newmarket. It is only small, but it is where the people who have escaped the community set up the resistance, they will be waiting for us on the other side. Any girls that we are able to rescue, we will pass off to them and they will shelter them and help them into the city for treatment,” Calypso explained.

“How will we get them out of the walls though? I’ve walked all along there. I never saw an opening,” I said with a frown and a shake of my head.

“There is a secret opening. It is pretty much hidden to the naked eye. You have to know it is there,” she said pointing at the map where there was a small line drawn through the wall.

“Do the High Priests know about the opening?” Jovian asked.

Calypso shook her head. “No. This was an opening created by the resistance members on the outside. The High Priests have yet to find it.”

She explained that the resistance had started with one family. A man named Oberon and his wife Rachel. As it turned out Rachel hadn’t been able to fall pregnant within the first year, so the High Priests were going to be taking her to become a street girl. Oberon hated the idea of her being taken from him, so set about digging out of the community. He dug where the opening now laid.

Oberon managed to free himself and his wife. It was once they were free that they began to realize that the High Priests had lied about the monsters. The only thing on the other side of the wall were people. People who weren’t wanting to kill them. Oberon declared that he would help save others who wanted to escape, so with the help of a few people from Newmarket created the resistance.

First the only people they could help were those that had been beaten and left for dead on the outside of the community, by the High Priests. They managed to save their lives and get them medical assistance.
