Chapter 41

Jaws of Defeat

I struggled harder. Of course, I should have known it would all come down to this if things went badly. If the Sylvans were able, they would capture me and hand me off to the Greylights on a silver platter. But not this quickly. I shouldn’t have been defeated, and Rudra himself shouldn’t have been here. This had all gone wrong. Horribly, terribly wrong.

“He was a feisty one,” the Invoker said, her voice quieter in my ears now that one of the vines was wrapping my entire head and closing my ears off from the world. “But as you all tend to do, he fell in the end because of his mortal afflictions.”

Rudra laughed. The vines hadn’t twisted my head back to its original position after I’d turned it to see him, and now I regretted that. Watching Rudra jauntily walk through the destruction, a smile tugging on his face as his eyes rested on Yippee, I struggled all the harder to get out of my binds and bash him in his long, horsey face. Sadly, that only made the vines grip me tighter.

Besides, I couldn’t really break free and attack. That damn Invoker and her monstrous Hound were still holding my poor Warg hostage.

“I’ll be taking him off your hands,” Rudra said.

“You won’t be killing him here?” the Invoker asked. “Seems unnecessary. He’s certainly very troublesome.”

“We need to extract some things from him first. That needs careful procedures. Not exactly something we can perform out here in the wild.”

“Then I’ll leave you to it. I need to take care of this mess.”

“I didn’t just come here for him.”

The Invoker had stowed away her gun and had been about to walk off—something I was cheering in my mind since that meant Yippee would then be partly free—but she stopped at Rudra’s words. She turned back, a small frown hooding her crimson eyes so that they looked like pools of shining blood.

“What else is there to discuss?” she asked.

“The Core,” Rudra said, crossing his arms. The plates of his amethyst Armour caught the light and seemed to shine. “How far are your people to it? It’s been, what, three weeks now? We’re still on the first floor.”

“We’re close to the end of the first floor. So, progress has been made.”

“It’s slow, though.”

“It is what it is.”

“And if it’s not enough?” Rudra took a step forward, his voice low but still audible over the whole area. “It’s your god you’re hunting for. Do you really think he’ll appreciate being stuck in there for so long?”

The Invoker’s eyes slid off Rudra’s face, scowl deepening when she saw me. “There is no reason to discuss this here. We will continue our exploration of the Endless Sprawls and we will reach the Core soon enough. The Old One will rise when his time comes. That will have to do.” She faced Rudra again, her eyes turning to slits. “And what of your efforts? I’ve been hearing disturbing rumours that your fellows are giving you great difficulties.
