- Vesper’s Surprise -

Myth woke in a bed. It took several seconds for her brain to process this information. The last thing she remembered was being in a sleeping bag on the ground, and this wasn’t even her bed. The ceiling was blue-green and silver, painted with mermaids and dolphins. She sat up as she realized what must have happened. Somehow, she was in Yearning. The poor cat…

Just then, the door opened. Myth pulled the blanket tightly around herself, though she realized belatedly that she was still fully clothed. A female fae, dressed in what Myth had to assume was a servant’s uniform, entered the room, emitting a startled squeak when she saw Myth staring at her.

“I’m so sorry, My Lady,” she said, bowing low. “I didn’t expect you to be awake. I have fresh towels for your bathing chamber.”

“It’s okay,” Myth mumbled awkwardly. “I’m just a little surprised to be here. I didn’t think the full moon was until tomorrow.”

“Oh, I don’t know much about your world, My Lady, but the clock tower has chimed twice since this morning. Prince Vesper will want to know that you’re awake, but he also said you are to be given time to bathe and dress if you wish.” Myth’s heart started to race at the mere sound of the prince’s name. She wanted to see him as soon as she could, but she wasn’t exactly prepared for him to see her.

“A bath would be great, but do you have any clean clothes I can wear?” She hadn’t had space to pack more than a couple pairs of clean shirts and underwear, but she didn’t see her backpack anywhere. Plus her regular clothes hardly seemed fit to wear here. Even the servant’s uniform was lovely, made of deep purple fabric and embellished with silver ribbon.

“Of course, My Lady. The prince has instructed us to provide you with a number of outfits to choose from, as well as dresses suitable for the ball.”

“Ball? There’s a ball?” Myth said, her voice raising an octave as she pulled the covers even closer.

“Yes, My Lady. It is a celebration of you, and a formal introduction to the nobility. But you have several hours to prepare beforehand. I will go run your bathwater.” Myth wanted to say that she could do it herself, but she felt like that would be insulting. Plus, she wasn’t going to complain about having a moment alone to recover from the surprise of waking up here. The last time she was in this bedroom, she had been too tired to appreciate it. She slipped out of the bed, letting her toes sink into the plush blue carpet before walking over to the first thing that caught her eye, a tapestry hanging on the wall. It showed a beautiful woman, the very picture of what Myth imagined a princess should look like. She was walking through a dark forest, and from her upraised hand light shone like a many-rayed star. At the top corner, a pair of glowing red eyes glared down at the scene.
