6.6 Muiredach’s Cross, west side, tenth century, Monasterboice.
The Irish high crosses have undergone a parallel rehabilitation to the Ruthwell Cross. After centuries of neglect, the Celtic Revival of the mid-nineteenth century adapted the iconic figure of these crosses as a symbol for Ireland and Irish culture. During the Irish War of Independence (1919–1921), they also became an emblem associated with the resistance of Catholic Ireland to English occupation. An exhibition of plaster copies of these crosses in the National Museum of Ireland demonstrated the modern interest and demand for everything from full-scale replicas to small reproductions on a variety of items, from gravestones to tattoos.
