“You’re coming with me.” Hertha stared blankly at her husband from across the breakfast table.

“What?” He grinned, disappearing into the bedroom. She heard him open and close the dresser. He returned with a pair of trousers hanging from his hand. “What are those for?”

“These are for you. You can’t exactly ride side saddle all day. They should fit.” He threw the trousers and she barely managed to catch them. “I had them when I left Texas. You’d be surprised, but I was thin. Very thin.”

Hertha inspected the trousers, glancing at the waistband, which was only as big around as she was, then at her husband, who wasn’t exactly small. She would have laughed were it not for the prospect of wearing the trousers.

“Raswell, I can’t wear these. It’s not ladylike.” He laughed.

“We’re married. It hardly matters if I see you in trousers.” He sobered after a moment. “Besides, you’ll be safer riding with me today.”

She sighed then went to the bedroom and replaced her skirt with the trousers. Looking at herself, she was relieved to see that they hung loosely. She wasn’t sure she could have gone through with it had they been any tighter.

Hertha pulled on her working boots, dawdling about leaving her room. Perhaps if she took long enough, Raswell would leave without her. But did she really want to be alone after what had happened?

“There, it’s not so bad,” Raswell said when she stepped into the kitchen. She glared at him but followed silently when he headed for the barn. “I really am sorry about the trousers, but side-saddle is a bit impractical, and I figured this was more modest than riding straddle in a dress.”

She nodded, saddling Ishmael, the wild horse they’d gotten in Aneth. Raswell placed a hand on her arm, stilling her movements.

“Are you sure about this? I haven’t been able to take him out much because he scares the cattle.”

Rolling her eyes, Hertha led the horse from the barn. She mounted, feeling odd as she straddled the horse. Though she wasn’t an expert, it was obvious that she’d be able to keep better balance that way.

As the young couple rode out into the pasture, Hertha kept an eye out for Raswell’s father. He would be easy to recognize. He looked a lot like his son if she was honest. It was a bit frightening, the way their eyes matched, the way they stood. But from what she could see, there had been a hardness about the man that Raswell didn’t possess.

Riding alongside her husband, she smiled, glad to have him. He really was a good man. Why had she ever doubted him?
