Chapter Five

An hour later she woke up, her eyes gritty and her head feeling as if it weren’t attached to her shoulders. She staggered through the empty living room and into the kitchen. Connor and Kyson sat at the table, their heads bent over some sheets of paper.

“Ah, Maddie,” Kyson said, sweeping the papers up. He spun around and shoved them into the dresser drawer behind him. “Do you feel better?”

Connor moved to lean against the dresser, almost as if he were protecting whatever Kyson had put there.

Her heart felt as if a giant fist was squeezing it. Kyson and Connor were hiding something from her. Because they didn’t trust her.

A small part of her knew they were right. She was keeping secrets from them too. But she was hurt. She’d thought they’d formed some sort of bond, but it seemed Kyson and Connor were able to separate their sexual desires from the rest of their lives.

She stood there, dressed once again in Kyson’s jeans, and felt like an outsider, bereft and isolated.

Kyson stood. “I have to feed the animals.” On Harwood Downs, the welfare of the animals came first. Kyson had a cowboy’s love of the creatures he raised and cared for. “If you’re feeling better, perhaps you’d like to help.”

Did he really want her help, or did he want to get her out of the homestead so Connor could finish up whatever they’d been doing? It didn’t matter. The future was set. She nodded. “Sure.”

Kyson took her hand. The familiar tingling warmth flooded her, from her palms to her toes. No matter what secrets they held, the sexual connection between the three of them was strong.

“Dinner will be ready when you get back.” Connor pushed away from the dresser and scooped Maddie into his arms for a kiss that made her toes curl.

“Hold that thought.” Kyson laughed, then led Maddie out the door.

In the stable, Kyson showed her where the feed for the horses was kept. She carried it into the grassy paddock behind the barn. The scent of fresh hay and well cared for horses filled her nostrils. She gave an extra handful of oats to the horse that had carried her around the property. In return, the horse nuzzled her shoulder.

Dusting the last bits of feed off her hands, she returned to the barn. Kyson glanced up from the feed sacks he was putting away. His gaze, through the dust motes sparkling in the last rays of evening sunshine, was heavy with lust and heat.

No, Kyson and Connor didn’t trust her, but they wanted her. If all they wanted was the pleasure their bodies could bring them, fine. That worked for her. She’d make it work. When it was over, she’d walk away without ever looking back.

The barn door squeaked open and Connor stepped inside. “We’re only having salad and cold meats for dinner, so I came to see if you needed help.” His gaze flashed from one to the other, his eyes narrowed. “You’ve been gone a long time and I wouldn’t want to think you were doing anything—interesting—without me.
