Lenny’s Conquests

Cleaning up after your spouse has died is never an easy task, especially when you’re going through his personal papers and wondering what you should keep. Such was the case with Marjorie Simpson on that cold December day in Hollywood when she sorted through her late husband, Leonard Simpson’s strong box. To Marjorie, he was her Lenny; the love of her life whom she had met when they were both fresh out of high school. They had been happily married for thirty-three years before Lenny fell sick and died in a relatively short time.

Marjorie had no trouble disposing of Lenny’s hunting rifles, tent, camping gear or any of the rest of his ‘macho crap’, as she called it. Lenny’s clothes all went to the second hand store, as did his shoes. Where Marjorie had problems deciding what to do came when she started going through Lenny’s personal papers. Receipts that were older than seven years went right into the trash. That was as long as she was expected to save them. The newer receipts went back into the filing cabinet, along with the title and registration for his car as well as the deed to their house.

Stuffed up on a high shelf in the closet, Marjorie found a locked strong box and pulled it down for a closer examination. She hadn’t recalled ever seeing it before and now her curiosity was burning. She stopped whatever else she was doing and sat on their king-size bed with the strong box at her side. It had a hasp and a lock on the front but she hadn’t come across any unidentified keys during her search. She stared at the lock for a short moment before she stepped over to her dresser and found her slim nail file. She inserted it into the lock opening and twisted. All that happened as a result was that she’d broken off the tip of her nail file. She held the box upside down and shook it until the tip of her nail file fell out onto the floor. She’d have to try something else.

Marjorie scratched her head, trying to think of a solution. It was then that she felt the bobby pin holding some of her hair in place. She smiled, removed the bobby pin and twisted it straight and then bent one corner. She inserted it into the lock and twisted it this way and that for nearly a minute before she heard the satisfying click and saw the hasp pop open. She pulled the makeshift bobby pin key out and laid it on the bed. When she opened the strong box she was pleasantly surprised to find four wrapped bundles of hundred dollar bills totaling forty thousand dollars.

Marjorie pulled the four bundles of bills out, rifled through the paper and set them aside. Below the bundles, Lenny had several other papers that looked pretty official. One turned out to be a deed for a cabin in the mountains. Another was a receipt for
