APPLE PICKING

In the autumn, the orchards surrounding Beaune teem with apples. We load up our 2CV with baskets, blankets, and a picnic lunch, and head south to visit a friend’s apple orchard. We have a few apple trees at our own house not far from Beaune, but there’s something nostalgic about picnicking in a big orchard, surrounded by rows and rows of apple trees. Luc and Manon climb the tall ladder and pick the apples, and before we know it, we’ve filled up an entire basket with these crisp red and golden beauties that we’ll bring home to make into apple tarts, cakes, and compotes. Sometimes, we end up with so many apples that we set out big baskets of them in front of the shop, so people can help themselves as they walk by. Once the apple gathering is done, we enjoy a simple autumnal picnic lunch outdoors, while the kids play in the rows nearby.
