Chapter 19

It doesn’t take long for the whispers to start. Burns is coordinating with the other officers in the hunt for the man who killed retired federal agent Dale Coleman. And two others. People who were my friends.

They know it’s my fault. Brandon and Lucy. They’re dead because I didn’t come forward. I see Jesse standing at the bar. Confusion masks his face. We have much more to say on the matter, but right now, I have to talk to Caroline.

I see her near the elevator and walk over. “Caroline, do you have a minute?”

She looks down, like she’s thinking whether talking to me is a good idea right now. I don’t blame her. But when she glances up at me, her eyes fill with tears.

“You should’ve told me about your past, Kylie. I would’ve changed the location. I would’ve done anything to protect you and the people I call my friends and colleagues.”

Guilt weighs on me, but I see truth in her words. “Please understand that I’ve had to protect my identity. I’ve done it for years, and I thought all of this was behind me.” My voice catches. “I’m so sorry, Caroline. I hope you can forgive me.”

She places her hand on my arm. “Despite what you think, this isn’t on you, Kylie. You’re not responsible for what a crazed killer does. No one here blames you.”

“I’m not so sure about that,” I say, looking around at everyone. “You have to get them all out of here. The sooner, the better.”

She raises her brow. “And you? You’re coming with us, yes?”

I glance over at Jesse, then set my sights on Burns and his officers. “No. I have to stay here and put an end to this. Someone figured out who I am, who I was, and tracked me down. No one is safe around me, Caroline. Not anymore.”

From the corner of my eye, I see Jesse heading our way. Caroline notices and holds my gaze for a moment. “I understand why you think that, Kylie, but remember that it’s the job of the police to find this person. Not you.” Her eyes dart to Jesse as he arrives. “Regardless, we’ll all respect your decision.”

“Thank you,” I reply. “Please, just get everyone away from here. As fast as you can.”

Jesse nods at Caroline as she walks away. “Everything okay?”

I turn to him. “Depends on your definition of okay. Sorry. I know that’s not what you mean. But Jesse, I do think you should leave with the rest of the crew. Everyone’s moving out in the next couple of hours.”

His brow creases. “Do you really think I’m going to leave you here? First of all, you’re coming with us, Kylie. You have to. Staying here is the worst thing you can do.”

“If I go, he’ll find me again.” I press my lips and close my eyes a moment. “I can’t let that happen. I’m staying here, Jesse.”

“Then so am I.”

My emotions rise to the surface. “You must have a million more questions for me .
