We live in a time of fear.

The kingdoms have been fracturing for years now, split by political backstabbing and ruthless assassination. The borders have been drawn and redrawn across the land so many times that nobody really knows where they belong anymore, which only adds to the confusion.

Luckily, our queen is still a great and noble one; A fair woman by the name of Queen Amelia who rules with decency in a time where decency is hard to find. Because of this, the people within the walls of our city remain happy as they go about their work. We are one of the last functioning communities in all the land, and the largest below the northern mountains that hasn’t yet descended into chaos.

Still, there is talk amongst the city folk of a looming disaster.

It all started with the crops failing for a second consecutive year. The farms outside of the city walls are the lifeblood of our food and economy, and although we have saved plenty to get us through a few bad years here and there, two in a row took more of a toll than those in power would like us to believe.

Not only that, but a trade dispute with Irondale to the east has caused our queen’s army to be ill equipped for battle. The soldiers are well trained, but that can only go so far when fighting with poor steel to begin with.

As the grumblings being to grow louder, secret meetings start occurring behind the walls of Queen Amelia’s castle; including strange men who ride into town from far away places, their bags overflowing with bizarre scrolls and potions. Some say that they are wizards, but true wizards haven’t been observed in these parts for decades. There are also reports of large wagons coming and going, heavily guarded by the cities best-trained warriors and covered in black tarps. Some have said they heard the sounds of livestock underneath, crying out in the night as they disappear into the castle, never to return.

These are strange days, and I’ve grown to expect almost anything. I’m still amazed, however, when a letter arrives at my father’s blacksmithing shop, marked with the official queen’s seal.

“Katrina?” my father calls to me as I emerge from the back room, covered in sweat and grease as I brush strands of long dark hair out of my beautiful face.

“What is it, father?” I ask, approaching him curiously. When I see the letter I stop and gasp. “Oh my god.”

“From the queen,” my father says, staring at the scroll in disbelief. “It’s addressed to you.”

We sit in silence for a moment, our minds racing with all of the possibilities that could be held within the ink that soaks this parchment.

“Well,” my father finally says, handing the scroll to me. “It’s yours, open it.”

I slowly crack the red wax seal and unfurl this beautifully transcribed document.”

“Katrina Rosewood,” I read aloud. “Your presence is requested with Queen Amelia tonight at sundown. Be ready.”

It is short and mysterious, not nearly enough information to set my mind at ease.
