It is believed by some that everyone attends their own funeral in spirit, if only to see who has turned out to say goodbye. It is not uncommon for family members to see the deceased who often appear bemused at what they perceive as the fuss being made over their empty shell. Catholic sacristan Tina Hamilton often senses the presence of discarnate spirits during the funeral services at which she presides at St Thomas Church, Canterbury, England.

‘I rarely see them, but I hear them and sense the force of their personality which has survived the death of the physical body. Sometimes I may even feel an arm around my shoulder. If it is a particularly strong presence they might try to communicate in which case I will hear them as another voice in my head. These are not my own thoughts. The tone of voice is quite distinct from my own. They tell me that they feel more alive than they did in life and will express frustration at not being able to be seen by their friends and family. Many express surprise at the number of people who have come to pay their respects while others seem amused at seeing a relative who didn’t like them but who has reluctantly turned up out of a sense of duty. Curiously, it’s usually their sense of humour that touches me most strongly. I suspect it stems from the relief of having been unburdened of their earthly responsibilities and fears and the sense that they are now free from the constraints of the physical body.

I have been presiding over funeral services for more than 50 years and can truly say that I have never sensed a spirit that appeared disturbed, although I once conducted the funeral service for a teenage suicide who came through to say how sorry she was for having brought her parents so much pain. She asked me to tell them that it wasn’t their fault. She had been suffering from depression and other problems which her family later confirmed to have contributed to her death.

Who knows who else is at the funeral of a loved one? The loved one themselves?
