Chapter 13

December 1996: Hong Kong Island

Zhang Wei was pacing around the lawn, his patience running out. Matthew had been sitting silent for a while. It was as if the stone had some kind of hold on him. Understandable I guess since he has been looking for something to show or tell him a truth he wasn’t aware of thought Zhang Wei. “So how long do you think we should sit here?” he asked, hoping to head back inside.

“Let’s give it an hour?” said Matthew, without a second thought.

“Hmmm. Okay,” he responded, wondering if Matthew was going to keep quiet the whole time or talk.

“The wait would be bearable if we could chat...” and before he could finish, Matthew interrupted,

“Of course, I have been waiting to talk some more about this!”

“…about anything but this,” Zhang Wei said, completing his sentence.

“We have nothing to go on Matthew! We would just be guessing, tossing around theories. What’s the point of that?” Zhang Wei said with a scowl on his face.

Matthew gave him an incredulous look. “I don’t understand you, Zhang Wei! Here we are, sitting on something that could change the history of mankind and you don’t want to talk about it! Don’t you see, this could be the truth to shatter all truths!”

“This hardly qualifies as truth or even a version of it. We don’t know a thing about it, it has not been verified and doesn’t come from a credible source. Why don’t you think rationally for a moment,” Zhang Wei said in a stern voice.

“I am being logical. We have an object that doesn’t look or feel like anything we have seen before. It gets its power from the moonlight and projects moving images which tell us facts hitherto unknown to mankind,” Matthew said, a little defensive.

“Facts! What makes this a fact over any moving picture you have seen which shows UFOs or legendary creatures in the sea? Please, Matthew. Let’s not get carried away,” said Zhang Wei, in a tired voice.

Matthew was very surprised. He didn’t expect this of Zhang Wei. “We have been so united in our discussions and rationale so far, turning every theory on its head, challenging every reality, or at least the widely accepted version of reality to most people. But we don’t fall under the category of most people. We want to think outside the box. Sometimes I have wanted to throw the box away. That’s why we joined that group, didn’t we?” Matthew asked, resenting Zhang Wei’s lack of enthusiasm. Zhang Wei was silent for a few moments, taking his time to respond.

“Yes, we did, until it turned into something else. Something far bigger than discussions. Yes, I like to debate things from every angle. Yes, I don’t take any truth or fact for granted and like to see if it stands up to logic. I don’t take things at face value and don’t accept them readily. But this is too much for even me to handle,” he said, making Matthew reconsider his approach.
