Chapter V: Evasion
The old man turned away from the sea and looked inland. From this higher up spot, he could see over the many fields and hews of trees, and if he squinted just right, far in the distance the house they had shared. He recalled the parties and their friends, and the old man thought about their many holidays to Greece. They had travelled well through life; that was until the other day.
The bodies of the two Nazi guards were still in the truck when they pulled into downtown Arras. Claudette, who was driving at this point, seemed to know the streets of Arras well, and Clive assumed she must have spent quite a bit of time there. Suddenly, Claudette steered down an alley between the walls of an abandoned factory, and then drove the truck through a large door that led into the factory's cavernous mechanics shop, where they parked and waited. They didn't have to wait long before the group of French Resistance Fighters appeared, and took positions around their truck.
“Hello, Spider,” Claudette said to the bearded face that appeared in the window next to Clive. “I'd like you to meet Captain Clive Westmore.”
“A pleasure,” said the man, maneuvering his hand through the opened window and shaking Clive's. He was middle-aged, dressed almost entirely in black, and his salt and pepper hair was combed straight back. He was obviously their leader, Clive thought, and was most likely the one person who was in possession of the rotor. Spider opened the door for Clive, who slid off the seat, thankful he no longer had to ride in a truck.
“We had a slight problem a little while ago,” Claudette said, opening her door and walking around the front of the truck to where Clive and Spider stood.
“And what might that have been?” Spider asked, but by this time Claudette had already started walking to the back of the truck. Spider and Clive had just caught up with her as she was loosening the straps holding the back doors closed. She opened the doors, and as she did, one of the soldier's hands dropped out, its fingers pointing accusingly at Claudette.
“Ah, I see,” Spider said, reaching over and flipping the arm back across the soldier's lifeless body. “So, how did this happen?”
“We had arranged for Chloe to keep one of the guards at the checkpoint occupied, but instead, both were there, and they seemed very suspicious,” Claudette answered. “While searching the inside of the truck, they discovered the faux bread and wire mesh that was hiding the guns and ammunition. They pulled their guns, and having no other choice, Clive had to shoot them.”
“Did you leave any evidence?” Spider asked.
“No, I doused the place in perfume, and strategically left a lipstick lying where it might be found. As there was no blood, it will be assumed that the men were having an encounter with their girls. However, by mid-day today, I'm sure the investigators will be called in.”
