Alina was not in the garden, nor on her way down to the river. She was up on the roof. During the long winter days, when getting out to her usual haunts was impossible, she had explored the house from top to bottom. Climbing the narrow winding steps in the last days of her pregnancy had been difficult, but right up until the day before the baby was born she had managed to get out onto the flat roof of the square Tudor tower.

On a clear day she could see the sea. Sometimes, with a little imagination, she would pretend to locate her home and see her younger brothers clashing wooden swords or chasing chickens. She’d remember the rough and tumble of fighting with them in the hay loft, her skirt caught up round her waist and full of spiky straw.

Sometimes she’d see a boat sailing up the river to fetch her, a big man with black hair and a soft black beard at the tiller and no crew, so when they sailed back down to the sea they would be alone. Today though, she had scrambled up the stairs to look out in the landward direction. It was far too late of course, Thomas was long gone, but she wanted to send a message in the wind to say she was sorry, to beg forgiveness for her angry words.
