As soon as Blaire walked through the open garage bay into the maintenance shop turned banquet and dance hall, Brenda grabbed her arm and pulled her off to the side “Where have you been all day?” she hissed.

Blaire stiffened. She hated when Brenda acted like her mother and questioned her like a teenager who was late for curfew. “Um, doing my job,” she said, yanking her arm away from her sister’s grip.

Brenda’s eyes narrowed. “Last time I checked we weren’t doing any advertising or promotions in town.”

“For one, that’s not true, we still have help-wanted posters hanging up at various businesses, and for two, my job at the moment is to situate the replacement help I found. Cole needed a phone charger, food, toiletries and clothes, and he has no transportation.”

“Since when is it our responsibility to do everything for our employees. It’s not your fault he showed up with nothing,” Brenda huffed.

“What is your problem?” Blaire asked. “If we want him to stick around, we have to help him get settled. I don’t see the issue with me making sure he has what he needs. I’m sure he’ll figure out a way to get his vehicle here soon, but I didn’t want to be left without help after Tim and the other guys leave while he did.”

Brenda’s quizzical face finally relaxed. “I guess you’re right. I just don’t like that you were alone with him for so long today. You should have sent Brittany or Brynn.”

“Why shouldn’t I be alone with Cole?” Blaire asked defensively.

“I’ve seen the way the two of you look at each other. It’s not professional, Blaire. And he’s clearly a player. I’ve seen his type before. He’s a smooth-talker, and a charmer. Trust me. You don’t want to mess with a guy like him. It’ll just end badly. And like you said, we need him to stick around.” Brenda lifted her chin ever so slightly as if to defend her argument.

“Thank you for sharing your observations, sis, but I’m a big girl. I think I can handle myself.” Blaire turned around and walked away, not willing to explain herself to her little sister a moment longer. As much as she wished Brenda’s words didn’t sting, they did. And it hurt like hell.

She’d seen a different side of Cole today, but her instincts in the beginning had matched her sister’s exactly. She’d ignored them of course, and wished she could forget about them after their kiss, but the truth was, she still wondered what Cole’s motivations were, and she doubted that the attention he’d given her all day had come without strings. He wanted something from her, but she couldn’t believe he truly wanted her.

“Everything okay?”

Blaire jumped at the sound of Cole’s voice right behind her. “What? Oh, yeah. Everything’s fine,” she lied.

“Are you sure? You seem upset.” Cole put his hand on her lower back, and butterflies filled Blaire’s stomach at his touch. She’d noticed all day that he’d been very careful not to touch her or stand too close, but he wasn’t holding back now.
