The rest of the family went in their own directions except for Danielle who joined Cathy, Michael, and Steve in the living room. “I apologize again for this disruption. I don’t know if you’re at liberty to say what the officers discussed with you, but I thought you should know what Officer Jones explained to me about Doris’ death.”

Cathy was curious. “He didn’t say anything to me. It seemed that they wanted to keep that information private.”

Danielle nodded. “It wasn’t easy to get it out of him, but I think he felt somewhat embarrassed that he didn’t listen to me in the first place when I insisted my mother didn’t have a heart attack.”

Cathy thought Mavis felt that way, too, although Dylan might’ve been right that her tears were false, hiding her guilt.

“So, what was that late clue that led them to believe Doris was murdered?” Michael asked.

“And how was she killed?” Steve wanted to know.

Danielle looked from one man to the other. She was seated across from them in the chair by the fireplace. They were on the couch on either side of Cathy.

“It was poison, as I suspected. A quick-acting one that wasn’t easy to trace.”

“How did they find it after a month?” Steve asked.

“The autopsy hadn’t shown it, but I requested that the food and drink that Doris consumed that night be checked. They didn’t feel it was necessary, but they collected the items. Because they weren’t prioritizing the matter and the lab was backed up, they didn’t get to it until now.” She took a breath. “I started to think they’d forgotten all about it, so I contacted them about a week ago to check and remind them. Dylan said I was crazy to keep pestering them, but I’m glad I did. I just had this feeling…”

Cathy was right. The reason Danielle was convinced her mother had been murdered was based on a hunch that turned out to be correct.

Danielle continued. “When they came today, I was shocked. I hadn’t thought my call had made any difference and, even if it had, I thought they’d found nothing and wouldn’t even bother letting me know.”

“What type of poison did they find?” Michael asked. Cathy knew he was interested in the scientific side of things.

Danielle met his eyes. “That’s what’s strange. The officer said it was xylazine, a type of medication used on animals to sedate down.”
