CHAPTER

TWENTY-TWO

I arrived in the teacher’s dock of the Magic Tower in a flash of blue light.

That earned me some startled looks from the other staff walking to and from their ships, but not the instant panic it would have if I had arrived like that anywhere else.

Here, they knew long-range personal teleportation was impossible, so they would be coming up with theories about how I had seemingly popped up out of nowhere. Invisibility spell? Maybe I had come in on a nearby ship and used a short-range teleport to draw attention as I exited. I was known here as an elementalist and a binding magic expert, so perhaps I had managed to harness a unique water element.

I strolled through them with confidence, mantle billowing behind me as I wore an expression like I was preening under their attention.

That would confirm their suspicion that I had done it for attention, which would fuel their speculation in the wrong direction.

Not that I minded telling them the truth, but this saved me the trouble. They frowned and shot glances my way as they tried to figure out what I’d done and why.

Those reactions faded as I outpaced the other mages on my way to my classroom. I nodded at those I knew and smiled even at those I didn’t.

It was my first day at work after inheriting a priceless starship. I was in a better mood than I’d been in since starting the job.

The slug-like Director Porellus oozed down the hallway, tendrils pulling him forward. His bulk took up most of the space, and I would have had to squeeze past his pale skin to reach the classroom door, so I just stood back and waited for him to pass.

He brightened when he saw me. “Professor Vallenar, welcome back! You had a bit of trouble yesterday, didn’t you? I’m pleased to see you’re safe.”

I wanted to check behind me to see if there was another Professor Vallenar I didn’t know about. Porellus didn’t want to see me safe, he wanted to see my charred corpse pulled out of a starship wreck.

It also took me a moment to realize what he was talking about. “Ah, you heard about the Hunter-ships?”

Porellus shook his head. “A shame. The Iron Legion should stick to Dark Space. I hear you showed the Hunters the might of the Magic Tower. Good for you.”

He patted me on the back with a soft, wet hand, and I half-expected my mantle to block it.

“You’re well informed,” I noted.

“It was starting to get lonely around here. I had to keep my eye out, to be sure you made it back to us.”

I returned the slap on the back, though his was squishy and damp. “Well then, I have a lot to show you.”

I expected him to shoot back something waspish, but he only laughed. If I was watching from the outside, I’d think we were really friends.

He slithered on, leaving me in front of my classroom door, but I couldn’t move.

Director Porellus hated me.
