Rowdy and Harley had just finished their meal together when a sheriff’s SUV came ambling up the drive. The Chevy Blazer was as old as dirt but not nearly as old as his Ford. It had to be rebuilt or modified; otherwise, it wouldn’t function.

A fit, halfway good-looking brunette got out of the SUV and put her hand on the butt of her gun. This was not the sheriff. He smiled, which allowed the younger woman to relax.

“Why does your truck work but no one else’s vehicle does?” Rowdy asked.

“As soon as America was hijacked by traitors and foreign opportunists, Sheriff Grady realized we had to take measures to harden our infrastructure, including our vehicles.”

“Smart,” he said.

She slapped the side of the truck. “This thing is falling apart every other day. But the mechanics removed anything electronic, replaced it with old parts, and retrofitted it to give us thirty or forty hours of drive time before something went wrong.”

“Your engine and my truck’s engine must be cousins,” he said with merriment.

“You buried your dad today,” she replied.

“How’d you know that?”

“Sheriff Grady spoke with your mother.”

“You come to offer your condolences?” he asked flippantly.

“Nope.”

“Why not?” he laughed.

“Tired of everyone’s manners here. No one knows how to talk like they’re real. Plus, half of them hate you if you weren’t born here. It’s like they do that on principle alone.”

“I take it you’re not from the South.”

“I’m from Seattle,” she said.

“Before or after?”

“After it turned into a freaking sewer, like the entire West Coast.”

“Let me guess, no one here appreciates a West Coast girl.”

“It’s just fine,” she said. “But if I wasn’t me, if I was one of them, I’d ask you to leave town and not come back. That said, this town is so boring, I don’t mind a little trouble, especially if trouble looks like you.”

“Thatta girl.”

She did a fake curtsy.

“This your first stint in law enforcement?” he asked.

“No, why?”

“You’re too nice,” he said. “Plus you have personality. What’s your name?”

“I’m not ready to tell you,” she said.

“Tell me something,” he grinned.

“I worked with Seattle P.D. Put in a few years there, and you’ll appreciate nearly every other place on earth.”

“Is that so?”

“First, they tell us to do our jobs when the city is burning, then they say stand down and let things play out, which was the worst possible approach. Then they reprimand us for doing our jobs and enforcing the law, which is now super-confusing. And then they let our collars go because the DA doesn’t want to prosecute criminals. But we want to prosecute; otherwise, we wouldn't have made the arrest! You’d think that’s bad enough, but then the DA started going after cops for doing precisely what we were trained to do. I get it, appealing to the politicians, and voters, but then it became a circus of contradictions.”

“I’ll say,” he said.

“We lost the top brass and a hundred officers in ‘20. I pushed through because I’m no quitter and I know crazy times don’t last. But they did.
