THANK GOODNESS BECCA didnât hear him kick the front door shut behind him or see the boot mark he left on the paint. Hopefully heâd get rid of it before she noticed. Right now, his hands were full with two grocery bags of ingredients for his migas.
Rascalâs Rodeo Scramble. He had to laugh and shake his head at that one, although it was rather catchy. Sheâd come up with it before heâd had a chance to mull it over. As an option, heâd suggested I Canât Believe Itâs Not Chorizo. When she countered with I Canât Believe Cody Thinks Thatâs a Good Name for It, he decided her original name wasnât so bad after all.
Penny hopped down the stairs and immediately got underfoot, almost tipping him over. Her enthusiasm matched Maxâs.
âI bet I know what you want,â he said.
A package of andouille sausage had fallen out of one of the sacks. Except the pup showed no interest. Instead, she followed Cody into the kitchen, running in front of him and circling his legs. Max had done a similar move on their walk back from Haileyâs.
After fixing his breakfast dish for nearly a week now, he finally had a grasp on how much food heâd need to get with each grocery-store run. Becca planned to keep serving it after he was gone, so those calculations would help her with future planning, as well.
He set the bags on the counter and promptly put the meat in the refrigerator. Before unpacking the rest, he decided to get a few housekeeping details out of the way. First, remove the boot scuff. He didnât want to see that added to one of her lists.
When he returned to the kitchen, he dried the serving platters that had been left in the drainer next to the sink, even though that wasnât on her list.
Much better.
He removed the other items from the bags, placing each one in its designated spot. As he did, an overwhelming sense of calm rushed over him. The only way he could describe it was that this place felt like home. His head insisted that was a bad thing. His heart disagreed.
Now that old Sally was incapacitated, heâd have to return to visualization only, which would best be done in his room with its soft mattress and complete silence. He could practically feel the flannel pillowcase against the back of his neck. Eyes closed, he imagined it now.
Until Penny started barking.
âWhereâs my little angel? Is he hiding?â someone called out from the other side of the kitchen door.
When the woman slid the door open, she was all smiles. Until it sunk in that Cody was standing there. His smile picked up where hers left off.
âIâm right here, Rose.â He extended his arms for an embrace, even though he was under no illusion that it would happen. Back in the day, she would have given him a real hug. And he would have hugged her back even harder. Those days were long gone.
Her calm, unaffected reaction told him that sheâd been warned of his presence.
