CYPRUS & THE HISTORY

OF FAT CHICAGO TONE

Fat Chicago Tone was born Anthony Richard Brown in a hospital not too far from his neighborhood, the Cabrini Green projects, in Chicago. By his fifteenth birthday, he had become one of the smartest and most prosperous criminals in the area, which enabled him after some time to add the “Chicago” to his childhood nickname of Fat Tone.

He was a member of one of the city’s gangs at twelve and quickly moved up the ranks with his ability to use his mind more than abuse it as he saw so many of his associates doing at the time. He also tended to stray away from the demented antics of friends and other gang members who, for some reason, seemed to be happier with jail and early graves than money.

At the age of eighteen, his talents for staying in the good graces of the almighty dollar and out of the grasp of law enforcement was recognized by one of the city’s top Italian crime bosses, Alfonze Cicero. Generally, the mob didn’t involve themselves with black folk too much when it came to business. But in the city of Chicago in the sixties money was tight for everyone, including organized crime. Cicero took the young Fat Chicago Tone, along with a number of his friends, under his wing.

Chicago continued to work smart rather than hard and eventually surpassed just running the gangs to being formidable competition for the Italians. Twenty-some odd years later, Fat Chicago Tone is still afraid of no one … and still respectful and cautious of Alfonze Cicero.
