If Parliament’s influence in choosing the Prime Minister and making laws has waned, so too has its authority in other ways. A series of scandals—ranging from ‘cash for questions’ in the 1990s, ‘cash for honours’ in 2006–7, and MPs’ parliamentary expenses in 2009—has greatly diminished the standing of Parliament in the eyes of the public.
