I was thirty when I met Jesse Addams. As if reaching that milestone in age wasn’t enough to make it a memorable year, he came along and made sure I would never forget it.

As if a precursor as to how eventful my relationship with Jesse would end up being, the way we met was just as hectic. Our paths crossed on a Friday night, only a few weeks after I had celebrated turning thirty with a group of friends, including Nicola. But when I say celebrated, I mean I just drank so much that I forgot about how old I was getting and also about the fact that I was no nearer to finding a stable partner to settle down with in life.

My friends had spent the latter part of my birthday evening trying to console me with assurances that it was only a matter of time until I met Mr Right, and telling me that I just had to stay positive and open to opportunity. Despite all the tears and tequila that night, I took their advice on board, and sure enough, it wasn’t long until a new man came into my life.

So how did it happen? Did he sweep me off my feet in a crowded bar? Get introduced to me through a mutual friend? Or did he stop me on my way to work one morning to tell me that he needed to have my phone number so that he could contact me at a later date?

It turned out to be the latter, but it wasn’t as romantic as it might sound.

Basically, Jesse crashed into the back of my car at a set of traffic lights.

I’d been sitting behind the wheel, making my morning commute, my eyes like slits and my head still longing for my pillow, when I felt a huge jolt and realised I’d been rear-ended. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt in the impact, so I was able to get out of my vehicle quickly enough and rush around to the back of it to assess the damage, both on the driver behind and on my own car.

Luckily, the other driver was okay, which was a lot more than could be said for my poor car, which now had a huge dent in the back end, although it was still just about driveable to get me the rest of the way to my office that morning.

As the driver responsible for the accident apologised profusely, I surprised myself by not feeling as angry or despondent as I could have done after such an incident. Maybe it was the adrenaline that came with being in a mild car crash, but as I stood there and looked at this apologetic driver, I thought about how handsome he was and about how I wished we’d met under slightly more normal circumstances.

He told me his name was Jesse, and he also told me that he accepted full responsibility for the incident, which was very kind of him, even if it was simply just the truth.
